Objetives: The aim of the study was to know contraceptives preferences to start sex life and risk of unwanted pregnance (and the main reasons for changing contraceptives methods).


Method: A descriptive, series of cases study was carried out. 237 women were surveyed for 8 weeks in our Family Planning Center. The main reason for a medical consultation was to change the contraceptive method. A data base was obtained incluiding socioeconomic and medical characteristics, as well as contraceptives methods and the reasons for changing the contraceptive method.


Results: The average age of the women was 30,4 years (age range 18-49, SD 7.3). The age of first sexual intercourse and risk of unwanted gestation was 19,08 years (13-32, 3.3 SD). The first contraceptive method were: condom 76,7% (n=182), hormonal method 18,5% (44), coitus interruptus 4,2% (10), intrauterine device 1% (0,4). In the condom group the change reasons were: contraceptive security 52,7% (n=96), contraceptive comfort 19,2% (35), dysmenorrheal treatment 6% (11), unknown 4,3% (8), medical advice 3,8% (7), unwanted pregnancy 3,2% (6), try different method 2,1% (4), irregular menstruation 2,1% (4), acne treatment 1,6% (3), oligomenorrhoea 1% (2), hirsutism 1% (2), others 2,1% (4). The mean time to change condom was 1589 days.

Conclusions: Condom was the most popular contraceptive method, more effectiveness and comfort were the main reasons for leave it.
