Access to contraception is an essential reproductive health intervention that helps to reduce maternal deaths by preventing or delaying pregnancy in women not intending to be pregnant or those at higher risk of morbidity and mortality. The provision of safe abortion is essential to prevent the complications arising from unsafe abortion. Quality is a critical component in the provision of all clinical services, including family planning. The definition of healthcare quality can vary but generally refers to the degree to which services are provided in an appropriate manner and achieve the desired outcomes. The accessibility, women-centered services, effective, efficient, equitable and safe are the main stones for excellent reproductive health care services. Less restrictive laws and policies are essential for that. Even where the laws are not restrictive, barriers to access can persist. Services must not be centered only on urban areas. Facilities may lack the essential commodities needed to provide good services. Professionals must be up-dated on scientific knowledge and well trained to provide effective methods of contraception to all who could benefit of it. Health workers may have barriers or refuse to provide care due to personal beliefs, religion or may have negative attitudes towards contraception, abortion and to the women seeking care. In special in abortion field professionals may be reluctant to provide care out of fear of being prosecuted or as result of the discrimination they face because of abortion related stigma. The provision of contraception and safe abortion is a telling indicator of our ability to respect women’s decisions and ensure that they have access to timely, evidence based care that protects their health and human rights.
